Warner Bros. Pictures Animation's Gala Presentation at Annecy Animation Festival Reveals Ambitious Slate and Star-Studded Casts

In the vibrant atmosphere of the Annecy Animation Festival on June 22, 2026, Warner Bros. Pictures Animation captivated attendees with a comprehensive presentation led by its President, Bill Damaschke. The showcase unveiled a dynamic slate of upcoming animated features, emphasizing both original concepts and celebrated adaptations.

A major highlight of the event was the announcement of a groundbreaking collaboration with Vivienne Medrano, the acclaimed creator behind “Hazbin Hotel” and “Helluva Boss.” Medrano, known affectionately as “VivziePop,” is set to make her feature directorial debut with an original animated musical film titled “Prehistoria.” This marks a significant moment for the artist, who has garnered a massive global following through her distinctive YouTube-driven projects and unique visual storytelling, accumulating billions of views across her content. Medrano expressed her long-held dream of creating a feature film and her excitement to partner with Warner Bros., a studio whose iconic characters have greatly influenced her life, on this “fossil fantasy world.” Damaschke underscored the studio's dedication to working with visionary, creator-led talent who possess strong direct connections with their fanbase.

Further exciting news came for “Bad Fairies,” the punk-rock animated musical comedy developed in partnership with Locksmith Animation, slated for release on May 21, 2027. Directors Megan Nicole Dong and Olivier Staphylas offered an exclusive peek, sharing two work-in-progress clips and the film's main anthem, “Live Out Loud,” performed by the formidable Cynthia Erivo and rising British actress Serrana Su-Ling Bliss, who lends her voice to the character Fei. The directorial duo also revealed additional cast members joining Erivo and Ncuti Gatwa, including English comedian James Acaster as Stickers and the prolific voice actor Dee Bradley Baker as Groundbeef. Baker's extensive resume includes iconic roles such as the clone troopers in the “Star Wars” animated universe, Klaus in “American Dad!”, Perry the Platypus in “Phineas and Ferb,” and Appa and Momo in “Avatar: The Last Airbender.” The film's creative team boasts impressive talent, including producer Carolyn Soper, editor Sim Evan-Jones, cinematographer James C.J. Williams, character designer Uwe Heidschötter, and production designers Justin Hutchinson-Chatburn and Mike Redman, with DNEG Animation serving as the digital partner.

The presentation also provided updates on “The Lunar Chronicles,” the second film from the WBPA and Locksmith Animation partnership, which is set to debut globally on November 3, 2028. Noëlle Raffaele and producer Christina Steinberg teased the audience with a fresh video clip, further building anticipation.

Additionally, Damaschke, alongside directors Erica Rivinoja and Alessandro Carloni and producer Daniela Mazzucato, showcased extensive footage from the highly anticipated adaptation of Dr. Seuss's classic, “The Cat in the Hat,” expected in November. The studio also introduced “Dynamic Duo,” a groundbreaking project from Swaybox Studios, a collaboration with DC Studios and 6th & Idaho. This innovative venture merges puppetry, practical artistry, and advanced technology to tell a modern coming-of-age story featuring DC legacy characters like Red Hood and Batman, much to the delight of the Annecy crowd. Damaschke lauded Arthur Mintz's leadership at Swaybox, highlighting their efforts to push animation boundaries by blending traditional puppetry, reminiscent of Jim Henson's work, with contemporary tools.

Concluding the presentation, Damaschke paid homage to the iconic Looney Tunes characters, acknowledging their foundational role in Warner Bros.' animation legacy. Directors Todd Wilderman and Hamish Grieve introduced the “Daffy Season” short, much to the appreciation of the short film enthusiasts at Annecy. The overall showcase strongly suggested that Warner Bros. Pictures Animation has a robust schedule ahead, with seven theatrical features and one theatrical short planned for release between 2026 and 2028, signaling a vibrant future for the studio's animated offerings.

This comprehensive showcase by Warner Bros. Pictures Animation at Annecy underscores a refreshing and forward-thinking approach within the animation industry. The studio's decision to embrace diverse creative voices like Vivienne Medrano, alongside established talents, highlights a commitment to innovation and audience engagement. It suggests a potential shift towards narratives that resonate deeply with contemporary viewers, while also leveraging beloved franchises. The integration of traditional artistry with cutting-edge technology, as seen in projects like “Dynamic Duo,” signals a promising era of imaginative and visually stunning animated content. This strategic blend of new talent, fresh stories, and technological advancement could set a new benchmark for animated storytelling, fostering a more dynamic and inclusive landscape for the genre.
