Chalamet and Gomez to Lead Illumination's 'Not Alone' Animated Feature

Prolific television creator ("Grey's Anatomy," "Scandal") and author on creativity and empowerment.

Timothée Chalamet and Selena Gomez are slated to co-star in Illumination's forthcoming animated movie, 'Not Alone,' which centers on an extraterrestrial narrative. This marks Chalamet's debut in animation, where he lends his voice to Joe, an unassuming rocket technician. Gomez, meanwhile, portrays Fran, an innovative astro-botanist who has developed a groundbreaking plant-powered rocket. The film's storyline escalates when three peculiar aliens seek sanctuary in Joe's residence, entwining their fate with the duo's mission.

The announcement, made during the Annecy Animation Festival, has generated significant anticipation. Joe, depicted as a solitary individual, finds his quiet existence upended by the arrival of Fran, whose scientific brilliance is matched only by her social awkwardness. Their initial interactions are fraught with a charming lack of romantic finesse, setting the stage for a unique partnership. The unexpected appearance of Dunk, Welly, and Shirm—three diminutive and rambunctious aliens on the run from a bumbling law enforcement officer named Zandro—further complicates matters. These extraterrestrial visitors quickly realize that Fran's innovative rocket could be their ticket home, adding a layer of intergalactic urgency to the film's premise.

The voice cast for the alien characters includes seasoned talents such as Rob Brydon, known for his roles in 'Barbie' and 'The Trip,' Diane Morgan from 'Cunk On' and 'Mandy,' and Jamie Demetriou of 'Cruella' fame. Brett Goldstein, star of 'Ted Lasso,' will voice the comically inept Officer Zandro. Additionally, the supporting cast boasts Allison Janney, recognized for 'Minions & Monsters' and 'The Diplomat,' and Lamorne Morris from 'Fargo' and 'Spider-Noir.' The directorial team comprises Illumination veterans Eric Guillon, co-director of 'Despicable Me 3' and original designer for 'Despicable Me' and 'Minions'; Claire Dodgson, editor for 'The Lorax' and 'Minions'; and Jonathan Del Val, co-director of 'Minions: The Rise of Gru' and 'The Secret Life of Pets 2.'

'Not Alone' is scheduled for release on April 16, 2027. Chris Meledandri, the founder and CEO of Illumination, is producing the film, with Joy Poirel, Richard Curtis, and David Distenfeld serving as executive producers. Illumination recently showcased its latest 'Minions' installment, 'Minions & Monsters,' at Annecy, receiving critical acclaim. Critics have praised the film for offering a fresh perspective on the beloved characters, highlighting its engaging narrative beyond the usual chaotic antics.

This upcoming animated feature from Illumination brings together a star-studded voice cast and a creative team with a proven track record. The film promises a blend of humor, adventure, and heartwarming moments, as an unlikely pair of humans navigates burgeoning romance and an interspecies alliance to help three adorable aliens return to their home planet.
