Why XRP's Price Remains Unaffected Despite Significant ETF Token Holdings

XRP, a prominent digital asset, has seen its value remain stubbornly unchanged, confounding expectations even as dedicated Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) have amassed nearly a billion tokens. This unexpected market behavior stems from a confluence of factors, primarily the modest percentage of XRP controlled by these funds relative to the overall circulating supply, coupled with Ripple's ongoing monthly token releases from escrow, which continuously replenish the market. Furthermore, a substantial drop in investment into XRP ETFs has negated much of the potential buying pressure that typically drives price increases in such scenarios.
As of late 2025, XRP ETFs began their operations, attracting a significant $1.51 billion in investments. This led to approximately 930 million XRP tokens being secured in custody, effectively removing them from immediate market circulation. However, this impressive accumulation represents only about 1.49% of the total 62.5 billion XRP tokens currently in circulation. For a genuine market squeeze to occur, the rate at which buyers acquire tokens must considerably outpace the rate at which holders are willing to sell. At the current ratio, there remains ample supply to meet market demand, dampening any price appreciation.
A critical counteracting force to the ETF-driven token accumulation is Ripple's escrow release mechanism. Since December 2017, Ripple has consistently unlocked one billion XRP tokens from escrow on the first day of each month. While a substantial portion (around 700 million) is typically re-locked into new escrow contracts, approximately 300 million tokens are introduced into circulation monthly to support operations, liquidity, and partnerships. This continuous influx of tokens directly offsets the supply reduction efforts by XRP ETFs. Over the nine months since these ETFs launched, the net effect has been an addition of two to three billion XRP to the circulating supply, significantly more than the 930 million tokens withdrawn by the ETFs.
The initial enthusiasm for XRP ETFs, evident in November and December 2025 with inflows of $666.61 million and $499.91 million respectively, has since waned dramatically. These initial figures accounted for a staggering 77% of all capital ever invested in these funds. Since then, inflows have plummeted, with July 2026 seeing only $27.29 million and August 2026 registering a mere $1.01 million. This drastic decline in new investment means that the buying power needed to drive a price surge has largely dissipated. Moreover, some existing ETF holders have also cashed out, as demonstrated by Grayscale's XRP trust, which saw a reduction from 122.23 million tokens to 55.04 million by June 30, due to investors withdrawing their capital.
The potential for a significant price surge in XRP hinges on a fundamental shift in market dynamics. For a true "squeeze" to materialize, the rate of token acquisition by buyers must substantially exceed Ripple's monthly escrow releases, which currently stand at around 300 million XRP. To absorb this monthly supply at current prices would require approximately $300 million in monthly buying pressure. However, XRP ETFs have averaged only $43 million per month throughout 2026, falling far short of the necessary threshold. The introduction of the CLARITY Act could be a game-changer. Both JPMorgan and Standard Chartered estimate that if this legislation passes, clarifying XRP's legal standing, XRP ETFs could attract up to $8 billion annually, translating to approximately $667 million per month. This level of inflow would more than double Ripple's monthly releases, finally creating the sustained buying pressure needed to outpace the circulating supply and potentially trigger a significant appreciation in XRP's value.
