Renowned game developer Sam Barlow, celebrated for his contributions to the Silent Hill series and critically acclaimed independent games such as Her Story and Immortality, has officially announced the title of his highly anticipated new project, previously known as "Project C." The game will now be called Precognition, a live-action science fiction horror experience that promises to push the boundaries of interactive storytelling.
Precognition builds upon the innovative narrative techniques seen in Barlow's previous works, particularly Immortality, by blending live-action full-motion video (FMV) footage with a non-linear storyline. This design choice aims to provide players with an unparalleled sense of agency and freedom. The game centers on a character named Diana, who acquires the ability to foresee future events after undergoing an experimental brain implant. This unique premise allows for a deeply immersive and personalized gameplay experience where player choices directly influence the unfolding narrative.
The creative team behind Precognition includes acclaimed movie director Brandon Cronenberg, known for his distinct work on films like Infinity Pool. Cronenberg’s involvement underscores the project's cinematic ambitions, as he seeks to infuse the game with his signature style of subjective and experiential horror. He noted that the interactive nature of games, especially those crafted by Barlow's team, offers an ideal platform to explore themes where individual perspectives warp reality, creating a truly unsettling atmosphere.
Barlow further elaborated on the development philosophy of Half Mermaid Productions, stating their commitment to exploring the limits of non-linear storytelling. The team’s focus is on how the game "feels to play," prioritizing player agency and the impact of their decisions. Precognition is designed as a world governed by cause and effect, where every choice Diana makes shapes her future and alters the game’s trajectory, promising an authentic and intense sci-fi horror journey.
In addition to these details, Precognition has found a publishing home with Kinetic Publishing, a new venture launched this year by the creators of Phasmophobia, Kinetic Games. The partnership was announced alongside four other titles on August 12, signaling Kinetic Publishing's commitment to supporting innovative indie developers. The diverse lineup of games, including Contact Protocol, Crescent County, Shellbound, and Aether Wizard Life, showcases a range of genres and creative visions, with Precognition standing out due to the celebrated experience of its creators.
This collaboration with Kinetic Publishing reflects a shared vision to empower independent game developers, allowing them to maintain creative control while receiving necessary support. The initial roster of games appears both inventive and compelling, with Precognition leading the charge, poised to captivate audiences with its unique blend of interactive narrative, sci-fi themes, and horror elements.
