Public Power Corporation (PPC), a prominent utility group based in Greece, has finalized an agreement to purchase ABO Energy's operational units in both Poland and Hungary. This strategic move is poised to bolster PPC's presence in the renewable energy sector across Southeast Europe, while simultaneously facilitating ABO Energy's organizational realignment. The acquisition encompasses all personnel from the two subsidiaries, a significant portfolio of solar energy projects, and a pipeline for future development, underscoring a commitment to sustainable energy growth.
The details of the financial arrangement for this transaction have not been publicly disclosed. Following the receipt of all necessary regulatory approvals, PPC, recognized for its integrated utility operations across Southeast Europe, will assume ownership of these two entities. Both companies anticipate that the acquisition process will be successfully completed before the conclusion of the current year. This venture marks a crucial step for PPC in expanding its footprint and capabilities within the burgeoning renewable energy landscape of the region.
ABO Energy has indicated that this transaction is an integral component of its broader restructuring initiatives and planned financial solutions. The company clarified that the sale of its Polish and Hungarian subsidiaries will not impede these ongoing efforts. Dr. Karsten Schlageter, managing director of ABO Energy, expressed satisfaction with the outcome, stating that this sale, alongside previous divestments in Greece and Finland, represents a focused approach towards markets where the company foresees sustained long-term commercial viability. He emphasized the positive solution found for both ABO Energy and its dedicated employees.
Since 2019, ABO Energy has actively engaged in project development within Poland and Hungary, spearheading numerous renewable energy projects and cultivating a substantial development pipeline in these nations. The company remains committed to finalizing its comprehensive restructuring and financing strategy in the upcoming months. A key aspect of the current deal involves PPC acquiring the Szarvas solar park in Hungary, which commenced operations in 2024. ABO Energy boasts a nearly three-decade legacy in the renewable energy sector, specializing in the development and construction of wind and solar farms, as well as battery and hydrogen projects worldwide. Its expertise spans the entire project lifecycle, from initial site assessment and planning to construction, grid integration, and continuous operation and maintenance. Last year, ABO Energy also concluded the sale of a significant 4.4GW wind energy portfolio to Fortum, a Finnish energy corporation, further demonstrating its strategic portfolio adjustments.
This acquisition by PPC represents a significant expansion into key Central and Eastern European markets, reinforcing its commitment to renewable energy. For ABO Energy, the transaction is a pivotal part of its strategic recalibration, allowing it to concentrate resources on core growth areas and ensure a robust future. The transfer of employees and a substantial project pipeline signifies a seamless transition and continued development in the region's green energy sector.
