Prolific television creator ("Grey's Anatomy," "Scandal") and author on creativity and empowerment.

Phylicia Rashad, a revered figure in acting and directing, recently engaged attendees at the 24th annual Martha's Vineyard African American Film Festival's C-Suite Luncheon. Her address delved into her remarkable career, her understanding of personal and cultural heritage, and her discerning views on the landscape of television today. The event, co-founded by Stephanie and Floyd Rance, aims to elevate and connect women leaders and business owners of color.

Embracing Heritage: Rashad's Philosophy on Life and Art

Reflecting on a Storied Career and Enduring Legacy

At the C-Suite Luncheon, sponsored by AARP, discussions centered on Rashad's impactful journey, spanning from her iconic role in "The Cosby Show" to her recent work in "The Gilded Age" and the "Creed" film series. The event also highlighted a new AARP study, "Bridging the Gap: The Path to More Authentic Portrayals of Black Adults in Movies and TV," which underscores the significant media consumption habits of Black adults and the positive influence of seeing older Black women authentically represented on screen.

The Genesis of Personal Heritage

When questioned about the essence of legacy, Rashad articulated a deeply personal connection to her roots. She attributed her understanding of legacy to her parents, grandparents, and the communities that shaped her early life. This foundational influence, she explained to AARP's CEO, Dr. Myechia Minter-Jordan, is the continuous thread that defines her existence and informs her artistic perspective.

Cultivating Future Generations Through Conscious Living

Rashad further elaborated on how legacy is perpetuated, viewing it as a conscious effort to instill values and wisdom in younger generations. She emphasized that authentic living and meaningful interactions are the true architects of heritage. Recalling her preparation for the role of Lena Younger in "A Raisin in the Sun," Rashad spoke of drawing upon her family's strength and resilience, rejecting superficial portrayals in favor of a deeper, human understanding. She expressed profound pride in the rich legacy passed down to her.

A Discerning View on Television Content

While celebrated for her role as Clair Huxtable, Rashad continues to make significant contributions to the entertainment industry, currently starring in HBO's "The Gilded Age" and Paramount+'s "Diarra From Detroit." Her recent directorial success with the Tony-winning Broadway play "Purpose" further showcases her versatility. Rashad shared her passion for historical research within her craft, seeing it as an opportunity to reflect on humanity's past mistakes and strive for a better future. She prioritizes humanity in her work, a lesson instilled by her mother, and views this approach as a form of liberation from external expectations.

Championing Authentic Representation in Media

Addressing the issue of inaccurate portrayals of the Black experience in media, Rashad offered a straightforward philosophy: "If there's something on television that I don't like, I simply don't watch it." This statement underscores her commitment to engaging with content that genuinely reflects diverse human experiences. Across her extensive career, Rashad takes immense pride in her work's ability to illuminate shared humanity, whether through characters like "Ma Pop, Aunt Esther, or Clair Huxtable." Her ultimate aim remains to demonstrate that despite superficial differences, human beings are fundamentally more alike than dissimilar.
