The esteemed Edinburgh Television Festival announced its transition to Manchester, effective summer 2027. This change marks a significant shift for the annual event, which has been a cornerstone of British broadcasting for nearly five decades in Edinburgh. The organizers cited a comprehensive review of the festival's operations, driven by the escalating expenses faced by both event planners and attendees.

The move to Manchester is primarily motivated by a commitment to enhanced accessibility and affordability. Manchester offers a more budget-friendly environment, particularly regarding hotel accommodations, compared to Edinburgh, a popular tourist destination. This strategic relocation aims to lower the financial barrier for delegates, ensuring a broader participation and fostering greater inclusivity within the UK television sector. Campbell Glennie, CEO of the TV Festival and The TV Foundation, emphasized that Manchester's vision aligns with the festival's creative ambitions and its dedication to talent development and inclusion.

The Edinburgh TV Festival is celebrated for its prestigious James MacTaggart Memorial Lecture, a highlight that draws prominent figures from the global media landscape. This year, Pedro Pina, Vice President Head of YouTube EMEA, will deliver the keynote address, following a long line of distinguished speakers including notable personalities like Michaela Coel, Rupert Murdoch, and Louis Theroux. The festival board, led by Fatima Salaria, believes Manchester provides the optimal conditions for the festival's continued growth and its mission to serve a wider segment of the industry.

This relocation represents a forward-thinking approach to ensure the festival's enduring relevance and impact. By making the event more economically viable and accessible, the Edinburgh TV Festival, under its new Manchester home, is poised to continue its legacy of fostering innovation, celebrating talent, and driving meaningful conversations within the television industry for years to come.
