Nine Dots Studio has officially postponed the release of its highly anticipated survival role-playing game sequel, 'Outward 2'. Originally slated for July 2026, the game is now expected to launch in 2027. This announcement came via a statement on Steam from Guillaume Boucher-Vidal, CEO of Nine Dots and creative director for 'Outward 2', who conveyed his apologies for the unexpected delay but underscored the studio's dedication to delivering a high-quality product.

Currently, a precise revised launch date for 'Outward 2' remains unspecified, with Steam simply indicating "2027" as the new target. This news is certainly a letdown for many fans who were looking forward to the game's early access release this summer, especially given that an open beta commenced on June 7th and had seemingly been progressing well. Chris, who experienced a beta version of 'Outward 2' recently, noted the game appeared to be on track, despite some minor imperfections.

Boucher-Vidal explained the rationale behind the decision, stating that adhering rigidly to the initial schedule would result in a game that might not fulfill players' expectations. He highlighted that the beta phase serves as a crucial opportunity to gather and incorporate feedback, and the studio has been actively listening to player comments. Many players expressed a desire for the game to undergo more development time prior to its launch to ensure a more refined experience. The CEO acknowledged the difficulty in accurately assessing the expected level of stability for an early access title, prompting the team to critically evaluate whether the game would be ready for monetization within the planned timeframe.

While the specific details of player feedback that led to the delay were not disclosed, it was implied that a deeper dive into the beta might have revealed more significant issues beyond the superficial ones encountered during shorter playtests. Boucher-Vidal conveyed particular regret to players who had arranged their summer plans around the original release date, emphasizing that it would be more regrettable for them to play a game they were ultimately dissatisfied with. This commitment reflects the studio's prioritization of player satisfaction and product quality over an arbitrary release schedule.

The postponement of 'Outward 2' underscores the challenges game developers face in balancing timelines with quality assurance, especially for complex RPGs. Nine Dots Studio's decision to delay the launch, even at the cost of disappointing some fans in the short term, demonstrates a mature approach to game development, aiming for a product that truly resonates with its audience in the long run. The studio is now focused on leveraging the additional development period to address feedback and ensure that 'Outward 2' lives up to the high standards set by its predecessor and meets the community's expectations.
