Rockstar Games is rolling out a major enhancement this week, offering PlayStation 4 and Xbox One players of Grand Theft Auto 5 a no-cost path to upgrade to the current-generation versions. This strategic move, announced by Rockstar on Wednesday, also extends new PC-exclusive functionalities to those with the 'Legacy' edition of the game.

Grand Theft Auto 5 Receives Free Next-Gen Upgrades, Preparing for GTA 6 Launch

Starting Thursday, June 18, enthusiasts of Grand Theft Auto 5 who possess a PlayStation 4 copy or the Xbox One digital variant will be eligible for a complimentary upgrade to the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X iteration. This initiative, detailed in a recent news release from Rockstar, promises that players on these newer consoles will experience the pinnacle of GTA 5 and Grand Theft Auto Online. Furthermore, Rockstar is priming its player base for a significant content drop in July, the Kortz Center Heist, destined for GTA Online.

The updated versions of GTA 5 and GTA Online for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X boast extensive technical refinements, streamlined migration of both Story Mode and Online progress, and fresh features. Among these are Hao’s Special Works, offering high-performance vehicles and enhancements, alongside Career Progress incentives, as highlighted by Rockstar.

Rockstar initially unveiled these “expanded and enhanced” editions of Grand Theft Auto 5 and Grand Theft Auto Online for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X in 2022. At the time, the studio emphasized a suite of technical advancements, visual overhauls, and performance boosts designed to fully leverage the potent hardware of these next-gen consoles, delivering a more visually stunning and responsive gaming experience.

PC gamers are not left out, as they too can access all the technical advancements of GTA 5, including exclusive PC features such as ray-traced ambient occlusion and global illumination, by upgrading from the Legacy to the Enhanced version without charge. These PC-specific enhancements were made available in March 2025.

Beyond the immediate improvements, there's another compelling reason to transition to the current-gen console versions of GTA 5 and GTA Online: these platforms are slated to host the highly anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto 6 this November. While a PC version of GTA 6 is yet to be confirmed, the focus remains on the console launch.

Originally debuting in 2013 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Grand Theft Auto 5 later saw releases for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2014, followed by a Windows PC version in 2015. Rockstar has maintained a consistent flow of new content and technical updates for both GTA 5 and GTA Online, cementing its status as one of the most frequently played games on PC. The Legacy version of GTA 5 continues to attract approximately 100,000 concurrent players on Steam, with the Enhanced version regularly peaking around 80,000 concurrent players.

The eagerly awaited launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 remains on schedule for November 19, a date that other game publishers are reportedly striving to avoid, underscoring its anticipated impact on the gaming landscape.

This strategic move by Rockstar Games to offer free next-gen upgrades for Grand Theft Auto 5 is a smart play. It not only rewards existing loyal players by enhancing their current gaming experience but also skillfully paves the way for the monumental release of Grand Theft Auto 6. By ensuring a seamless transition and a superior graphical and technical foundation, Rockstar is building anticipation and loyalty, making sure its community is primed and ready for the next big chapter in the franchise. It's a testament to the longevity of GTA 5 and a promising signal for the future of the series.
