Paramount Unveils 'Freddy the 13th' at Annecy Festival
On June 22, 2026, during the prestigious Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France, Paramount Animation officially announced the development of 'Freddy the 13th.' This animated movie draws its inspiration from the graphic novel of the same name, penned by Yehudi Mercado, who is also co-directing the film. The narrative centers on Freddy Vanwinkle, an unlucky 13th-born child who inadvertently assumes the powers of the Boogeyman after a comical mishap during a family getaway. Director Dan Trachtenberg, who recently inked a significant three-year first-look deal with Paramount Pictures, expressed his enthusiasm for creating a film suitable for families, a departure from his previous, more intense cinematic endeavors. Ben Rosenblatt will join Trachtenberg as a producer on this project. Trachtenberg's impressive directorial portfolio includes the 2016 thriller '10 Cloverfield Lane,' the 2022 hit 'Prey,' and upcoming animated feature 'Predator: Killer of Killers,' alongside the live-action 'Predator: Badlands.' He has also helmed episodes for popular television series such as 'The Boys,' 'The Lost Symbol,' and 'Black Mirror.' Under the leadership of newly appointed president Jennifer Dodge, Paramount's animation division is actively expanding its slate, with other projects in the pipeline including a 'Survivor' themed movie featuring animal contestants and a festive adventure titled 'The Naughty List,' directed by Robert Rodriguez. The studio's next release will be 'PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie,' slated for an August debut.
This initiative by Paramount to diversify its animated offerings, particularly with a PG-rated horror-comedy, reflects a smart strategic move in the competitive landscape of family entertainment. The combination of an established graphic novel, a director with a proven track record, and a studio committed to innovative storytelling suggests that 'Freddy the 13th' has the potential to become a beloved addition to the animated film canon. It's a reminder that even the most unexpected themes can be reimagined for a broader audience, demonstrating the versatility and creative spirit thriving within the animation industry.
