Former chief creative officer of Pixar, whose principles of storytelling have shaped modern animation.

In a surprising turn for the final season of "The Comeback," actress Lisa Kudrow decided to cast her son, Julian Stern, in a pivotal role. The series, which features Kudrow as Valerie Cherish navigating the complexities of an AI-written sitcom, recently unveiled its fourth episode, where Cherish grapples with production challenges. During a table read for the show's second episode, Cherish encounters a puzzling jail scene and expresses concern over her co-stars' limited dialogue. Her investigation leads her to Marco, the AI assistant, who then introduces Evan, a "troubleshoot tech guy." Evan clarifies that the unusual scene is an AI "hallucination," a glitch between the AI's prompt and its knowledge base. This storyline provided an unexpected opportunity for Kudrow to involve her son, who portrays the character Evan.

Kudrow shared insights into the decision to cast her son during a recent interview, revealing that the idea came naturally during the scriptwriting process. She and co-creator Michael Patrick King recognized Julian's innate suitability for the role of a tech-savvy, uncorrupted character. Julian's presence on set brought a unique familial touch, especially since filming took place at Warner Bros.' Stage 24, the former home of "Friends," where Kudrow worked during Julian's early childhood. Despite not growing up on film sets, Julian demonstrated remarkable composure and talent during his acting debut. Kudrow praised his performance, noting his ability to inhabit the character effortlessly and handle the demands of a first-time acting gig with grace.

Julian's talents extend beyond acting; he has a strong background in filmmaking, having studied it at USC, and possesses a flair for writing and animation. Kudrow proudly recounts his early stop-motion projects and "mind-blowing" short stories, highlighting his diverse creative abilities. His performance in a high school production of "The Laramie Project" particularly moved his parents, solidifying their belief in his artistic potential. In addition to Julian, this season of "The Comeback" also features Ella Stiller, daughter of Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor, as Cherish's social media assistant. King emphasized the freshness and raw talent these new faces bring to the show, allowing audiences to discover them without preconceived notions.

The integration of real-life family into the fictional world of "The Comeback" not only adds depth and authenticity to the narrative but also celebrates the emerging talents of a new generation in the entertainment industry. It highlights the importance of recognizing and nurturing individual potential, irrespective of familial connections, and reminds us that true talent shines through, creating unique and compelling experiences for audiences.
