Janelle James Developing New Comedy Series 'Rock City' for Hulu

Prolific author of horror and suspense, who also writes extensively on the craft of writing and pop culture.

Janelle James, acclaimed for her role as Ava Coleman in the hit series "Abbott Elementary," is venturing into new creative territory with a forthcoming comedy series for Hulu. Collaborating with David Caspe, the creative force behind "Happy Endings," James is developing a show provisionally titled "Rock City," promising a unique blend of humor and intriguing narrative.

The concept for "Rock City" revolves around a protagonist who inherits a local tourist destination in the picturesque Virgin Islands from her estranged father. This inheritance, initially appearing as a modest beachfront bar and grill, soon reveals itself to be a more intricate and mysterious legacy. While James is serving as an executive producer alongside Caspe, who is also contributing to the project from Universal Television, it remains uncertain whether she will also take on an acting role in the series.

James's career has been marked by significant achievements, particularly her compelling portrayal in "Abbott Elementary," which has garnered her numerous accolades, including a Critics Choice Award and multiple Emmy, Golden Globe, Independent Spirit, and Gotham Award nominations. Beyond her acting success, James is a respected stand-up comedian, having toured with prominent figures in comedy and featuring in Netflix's "The Stand Ups." Caspe also brings a wealth of experience, having co-created shows like "Black Monday" and "Mr. Throwback." This collaboration between two comedic talents suggests a promising addition to Hulu's offerings.

This new project represents an exciting evolution in Janelle James's career, showcasing her burgeoning influence in television production. Her dedication to bringing fresh and engaging stories to the screen, combined with David Caspe's proven track record, points towards a vibrant and entertaining series that will undoubtedly captivate audiences and further enrich the landscape of contemporary comedy.
