Bandai Namco Adopts Facial Recognition to Combat Card Game Scalping

In response to the pervasive problem of scalping in the collectible card game market, Bandai Namco has announced the introduction of facial recognition systems in its Japanese stores. This strategic move, which mirrors a similar initiative by The Pokémon Company, is designed to ensure equitable sales opportunities for all customers and enhance the security of its retail environments. The card trading and collecting hobby, while enjoyable for many, has unfortunately become a lucrative target for resellers who purchase products en masse at retail prices only to offload them at significantly inflated rates.

Bandai Namco Rolls Out Facial Recognition for 'One Piece Card Game' in Japan

Starting August 22, 2024, Bandai Namco will deploy facial recognition technology in its outlets that stock the popular One Piece Card Game. Upon entering these stores, customers will be identified, and their recent purchase history and frequency of visits will be scrutinized. This system will enable staff to refuse sales to individuals deemed to be engaging in bulk purchasing for resale. This decision comes after The Pokémon Company successfully implemented comparable technology in its stores, not only to deter scalpers but also to bolster security following alarming incidents, including a significant robbery and a homicide.

Bandai Namco's official statement underscores that these facial recognition systems are intended to "provide all customers with fair sales opportunities." However, the safeguarding of their employees is also a critical factor driving this technological adoption. With the new security measures in place, store personnel are expected to experience a heightened sense of safety within their workplaces.

The company's in-store privacy policy explicitly states its capacity to gather customer data during offline transactions, encompassing personal video footage and images. For online purchases, Bandai Namco reserves the right to collect personal data such as search and browsing histories, alongside IP addresses. Customers identified as suspicious through these data points will be unable to finalize their purchases.

While these advanced measures are likely to spark discussions among fans regarding privacy boundaries, the escalating issue of scalping has reached a point where both Bandai Namco and The Pokémon Company can no longer afford to overlook it. Currently, these policies are exclusive to Japan, with no immediate plans for their expansion into international markets.

The implementation of facial recognition technology by major card game companies like Bandai Namco marks a significant pivot in addressing market exploitation. It highlights the growing tension between consumer privacy and corporate efforts to maintain fair trade practices and secure retail environments. This move could set a precedent for other industries grappling with similar issues, pushing the boundaries of how technology is used to manage customer behavior and protect commercial interests. It also compels us to consider the long-term implications of such surveillance on consumer trust and the overall shopping experience.
