B2Gold, a prominent gold producer, recently disclosed its financial outcomes for the second quarter of 2026, alongside key operational advancements and revised production targets. A significant development was the acquisition of the Menankoto Exploitation Permit in Mali, which is set to boost the Fekola Regional project's gold output. The company also addressed challenges, including a fire at its Goose mine, while maintaining a strong focus on shareholder returns and strategic exploration efforts.

B2Gold Navigates Operational Hurdles and Strategic Growth in Q2 2026

In the second quarter of 2026, B2Gold achieved a consolidated gold production of approximately 204,000 ounces, surpassing expectations at its Fekola, Masbate, and Otjikoto mines. This strong performance partially offset the impact of a fire in April at the crushing circuit of the Goose mine, which led to temporary production disruptions. The company's adjusted net income, excluding one-time gains and non-recurring items, stood at $41 million, translating to $0.03 per share. Michael McDonald, the chief financial officer, noted that net income attributable to shareholders was $417 million, or $0.31 per share, primarily due to the sale of Finland Properties and unrealized derivative gains. Free cash flow was reported at negative $258 million, aligning with earlier projections. B2Gold successfully completed the sale of its 70% interest in Finland Properties to Agnico Eagle for $325 million. Additionally, the company actively engaged in capital returns, repurchasing 19 million shares for $92 million during the quarter and distributing $52 million in dividends, bringing total shareholder returns for the first half of 2026 to $224 million.

A pivotal moment for B2Gold came with the Malian government's approval of the Menankoto Exploitation Permit. This authorization allows the company to commence pre-stripping operations at the Fekola Regional deposit, with production anticipated to scale up through 2027 and yield over 150,000 ounces of gold annually from 2028 into the mid-2030s. President and CEO Mike Cinnamond underscored the importance of this milestone for the Fekola complex, highlighting the company's readiness to proceed. The permitting process in Mali has been streamlined under the country's updated 2023 Mining Code and new governance structures, including a mining commission and the state mining company SOPAMIM. Randall Chatwin, Senior Vice President of Strategy and Chief Legal Officer, mentioned that a similar permitting process for Dandoko is slated for late 2027, with smoother approvals expected under the new framework.

At the Goose mine, remediation efforts and the initial phase of crusher upgrades are on track for completion by the close of the third quarter. A new Metso mobile crusher, deployed in July, is expected to significantly boost crushing capacity beyond 3,000 tonnes per day, with throughput projected to exceed 4,000 tonnes per day by the latter half of 2027. Bill Lytle, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, confirmed that underground development at Goose is progressing well, nearing its 12-meter-per-day target, with high gold grades anticipated in late 2026. In light of the Menankoto permit delays and the Goose fire, B2Gold has adjusted its 2026 consolidated production guidance to between 820,000 and 920,000 ounces, while maintaining cash operating cost guidance. All-in sustaining cost guidance was lowered to $2,370 to $2,550 per ounce sold, with full-year results expected at the lower end of this range.

Exploration activities are intensifying, particularly at Fekola Regional, with plans for additional work focusing on sulfide material. At Goose, six drills are actively involved in deeper and infill drilling at the Llama deposit to upgrade inferred resources. The Gramalote project continues to advance through permit modifications and resettlement, extending into the first half of 2027. Cinnamond reiterated the company's immediate priorities: accelerating the Fekola Regional ramp-up and finalizing the repairs and enhancements at Goose.

B2Gold's second-quarter performance underscores a company adept at managing operational complexities while pursuing strategic growth. The successful acquisition of the Menankoto permit, coupled with ongoing efforts to restore and enhance the Goose mine, positions B2Gold for sustained gold production growth. The company's commitment to exploration and prudent capital allocation further strengthens its long-term prospects in the dynamic global gold market. While facing unforeseen challenges, B2Gold's leadership has demonstrated resilience and a clear vision for advancing its projects and delivering value to shareholders. This blend of strategic foresight and operational adaptability highlights B2Gold's robust position in the competitive gold mining sector.
