Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL) has recently faced scrutiny following a series of prominent exits from its artificial intelligence sector. Gene Munster, a managing partner at Deepwater Asset Management, emphasized the gravity of these departures on CNBC, suggesting that the loss of key AI researchers could have broader implications for the company's innovation culture and its future AI development efforts. He pointed out approximately six significant resignations within the past three months and noted a decline in the performance of Google's Gemini model compared to rival offerings, indicating a concerning trend.

Enthusiasts also reference Elon Musk's projections for AI, suggesting that if SpaceX can expand its AI computing capacity from 1.4 GW to 15 GW by the end of 2027 at a cost of $50 million per megawatt, it could unlock an annual AI revenue potential of $750 billion. However, a more cautious perspective highlights the substantial capital expenditure required. SpaceX invested $15.8 billion in AI capital expenditure in a single quarter for merely 0.4 GW of new capacity, equating to roughly $40 billion per gigawatt. Achieving Musk's 15 GW goal would necessitate capital expenditures that would far exceed the company's current $100 billion cash reserves. JPMorgan analysts estimate $200 billion in capital expenditure for both 2027 and 2028, with SpaceX experiencing a negative free cash flow of $25 billion in the first half of 2026. Furthermore, customer concentration presents a risk, as two clients accounted for 38% of quarterly revenue, and cloud contracts typically allow for cancellation with 90 days' notice. Anthropic, for instance, has established partnerships with major tech firms like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Nvidia, providing it with ample alternatives to SpaceX's services.
